Michael Craft
Founder and currently only artist with Earth Cube Records, I make the kind of music that I grew up on and love to listen to. Taking inspiration from the timeless and innovative music of everyone from Debussy to the Beatles, I center my own music around strong melodies, good harmonies, and unique chord progressions and accompaniment.
My Story
I got my start playing music as a little kid picking out melodies and theme songs from TV shows, movies and video games on the piano. Although I d have a handful of piano lessons when I was very young, I've never had any serious or formal training on any musical instruments. I slowly learned how to carry a tune on the piano and had written several classical-inspired pieces by the age of twelve.
Around this time, I had developed an interest in the guitar as well. The first song I ever learned on the guitar was "Eight Days a Week" by The Beatles. I had taught myself to play on my mother's Taylor by listening to it over and over while picking out the chords note by note. It wasn't long before I began writing my own songs. The problem though, was that I wanted to recreate all of the sounds I was hearing in my head and to do that, I needed drums and bass. So I asked for a drum kit for my birthday and a bass for Christmas. By the age of about fifteen I had written around a dozen songs and had recorded them on my laptop in my bedroom with one microphone.
I spent my high school years splitting my time between basketball and writing and playing music with friends, but by the time I was applying to college, I had decided that making music was what I wanted to pursue. I spent my freshman year in Belmont University's Music Business program just up the road from home. However, it just didn't seem to be for me, so my sophomore year, I transferred up the street to Lipscomb University's brand new Commercial Music program. Although I loved my time there and got a lot out of the experience, I decided to step away and focus on music full time after three semesters.
Since then I have continued to improve my skills as a musician and build a catalog of original material while working first at Big Machine Label Group as an intern, and more recently at local vintage guitar store Rumble Seat Music as a photographer and web designer. It wasn't until late 2021 that I was able to renovate the basement and turn it into a proper home recording space and begin working on my first solo project to release. Although I have been in several bands over the years and worked with other songwriters and musicians, I have found that the best and easiest way for me to get the sounds I hear out of my head and onto a recording is to do it myself. Every instrument and vocal track on my record was written, performed, recorded and mixed by me.
